I have had a hard time getting inspired this week, and I’m not exactly sure why. But this is the photo I chose. This is my best friend, Sam. We met when we were in 6th or 7th grade, riding together on a ski trip with some mutual friends. She had just recently moved to North Carolina from California and was skinny and tan wore blue a lot. We became instant friends. We went to high school together and went on gymnastics trips and music tours and class trips together. We went off campus to buy bad gas station coffee, ate our lunches in the hall, and worked on class projects together. We had the same friends and hung out on weekends together. But, when we graduated, we chose different colleges; her going to Tennessee and me heading west to Nebraska. But we always get together when we’re both home.
This year she’s in Africa, working as a nurse, and I’m in California, working as a girl’s dean at a boarding academy. It’s funny how life moves and changes and sends us to different places. But this girl has always been a rock in my life, she’s been there for me when things get dark and when life is bright and logical.
I’m really thankful for her, as a beautiful human being, as a best friend, as a model, and as someone who’s giving her time to help those who need medical care in a place where the options for medical care are rare and much needed.
